SEMA Show 2009

We are getting settled back into the swing of things after attending another awesome SEMA show! Wow, there are some very impressive builders and creations out there. As you might know or can imagine, everyone goes all out for this event.

We were invited to display our newly completed Pro Touring 1969 Camaro RS Convertible for the guys at Custom Auto Sound--we were thrilled for the compliment as well as the opportunity to get Gearhead's name out there on the national stage.

Jimmy's Old Car Show and Picnic in SF

For years we have been trying to get down to this event! Jimmy's Annual Picnic and Car Show in Golden Gate Park is held this weekend at SpeedWay Meadows (how fitting)...And finally we're going! Going on 21 years, this event is an institution and is held practically in our backyard from where we (Jason and Robyn) grew up--so it's particularly ridiculous that we haven't participated in it sooner.

This show is supposed to be really fun because it is casual and has a unique San Francisco flavor--can't explain--you just know it when you're there. We'll be driving the red 68 Camaro RS/SS convertible and the baby blue 62 Nova SS convertible down to the bay for a little show n' shine SF style! There is going to be a lot going on in the city this weekend, but if you're in the area come by--the picnic is held this Sunday 10/11 from sunrise to sunset...

Shop Dog

After many wonderful years, and more games of fetch than we dare to count, our shop dog Lars, has passed on. He was a great dog and he enjoyed his role at the shop as well as the appreciation and attention our employees showered him with on a daily basis. He was a very reliable guy who we enjoyed greatly--Lars will be missed!

We are excited announce and welcome Lars' successor, Diesel! This BIG BOY is an amazing powerhouse of a dog. This guy is a beast. Diesel is a 1.5 year old Rottweiler weighing over 110lbs and is nothing to think twice about. We know our customer's cars are safe with him patroling the premises!

Big Boys Toy Store

Gearhead Garage made a solid appearance at this year's Hot August Nights Show in Reno last week. We set up shop in the Big Boys Toy Store and showcased our nicest builds to date: 2 Pro Touing 69 Camaro's. We received incredible feedback about both the cars...and if we don't say so ourselves, they are pretty damn sick. Check them out through these links to the gallery on our site:

1st Place in Another Car Show!!

Gearhead Garage took first place in another car show! Downtown Roseville hosts a Tuesday night Car Show & Farmer's Market every Tuesday night during the summer months. We try to make it out there at least a few times during the summer but our shop is so busy it can be hard to find the time--especially right now during the push for Hot August Nights.

Well we found the time this week and it was well worth our while. Our 2-tone 69 Chevelle wowwed the judges and was resoundingly voted first place against many other worthy contenders.

We love to win.

1973 Javelin back at Gearhead Garage!

Well, the ’73 AMC Javelin project we’re restoring just came back from sandblasting- American Stripping did a phenomenal job! ALL of the exterior, door jambs, trunk & engine bay have completely stripped and primed. The entire underside of the car is FINALLY free of 35+ years of nasty grease & grime.

The original engine has been freshly rebuilt: a balanced rotating assembly w/ forged pistons, ARP rod bolts and a slightly oversized cam will be set into the otherwise stock Javelin (dual exhaust, disc brakes an alarm system, and of course a stereo will likely be the only other deviations from all stock build plan). The transmission and driveline are also completely rebuilt and ready to roll.

At this point, we are busy ordering parts to keep things moving along. The AMC will undergo major bodywork & paint, the chrome has all been sent out to be redone, and all of the factory stainless is getting polished @ Britex.

We’ll keep you posted………

1968 Camaro SS almost back from paint!

After a WHOLE lot of work, Dan Brown is almost done painting a spectacular ’68 SS Camaro for us! (2) new fenders, (2) new quarter panels and a new rear panel later, this healthy ’68 is in the spray booth getting the final coats.

After extensive bodywork, the car was jambed with the fenders, doors, trunk lid & hood off of the car. Then the panels themselves were all hit with a few coats of red base. After refitting all of the panels, checking & adjusting all the gaps, and inspecting all of the body lines, the car is block sanded one more time, and sent into the booth for final paint! 1 or 2 pics show the car with red stripes- this is actually just the red base showing through the masking pattern, the stripes are actually white. Once the white stripes are based in, they get wet-sanded and the whole car gets multiple coats of clearcoat to seal in both colors……

Stay tuned for some flashier photos of the paint job!

A few car specs:
406ci small-block Chevy w/ full roller cam/lifters & rockers
Race prepped 200R4 overdrive transmission
4-wheel disc brakes
Full Hotchkis Suspension w/ tubular control arms
12-bolt posi rearend

CRAZY Rare Car Collection!

This took the cake. When visiting Chicago, I was priviledged to be invited to a family friend's home with one hell of a car collection.

This private collection consisted of some of the nicest cars that most any of us will ever see. Although there were no Fords there this time, American muscle cars were heavily represented.

**Multiple (3) GSS Darts with 440's, ala Mr Norm and Grand Spaulding Dodge.
**Other ultra rare Mopars including a 440 RT Challenger, a 440 RT Roadrunner and a Hemi Challenger with 500 original miles .
**A 1967 Bill Thomas Race Cars Camaro (likely the owner's favorite) with original Mickey Thompson headers prototyped f rom this car, a blue 1967 Nickey 427 Camaro (for those that aren't in the know--a Nickey is the equivalent of a Yenko but from Chicago), an 11 second small block powered Nickey 1968 Chevelle, a pair of 1969 Nickey Vettes, a 427 Nickey Chevelle and of course a quinessential LS6, numbers matching Chevelle.
**Rounding out the collection, was the original Arnie Beswick 1968 GTO Drag Car, a super-clean W-30 Olds Cutlass and a GS Stage One Skylark Convertible.

And those weren't the only cars! Plus the "barn" was fully decked out in original Route 66 memorabilia, rare lithographs and original muscle car art. Not a tool, used part or drop of oil in site. Pretty awesome for a car guy!

New Project! 1973 AMC Javelin

Gearhead Garage is taking on a slightly random new project, a 1973 AMC Javelin. This rare, 2- door coupe was brought to us by the original owner and will be completely restored. Although not quite one of our usual choices (it's not a Pro Touring Camaro), it does have a good story.

The owner, who owns a car from each and every decade dating back to 1900, is having us tear it down and restore it to near new or better than new condition for one of his granddaughters. Instead of a new car, the high school student granddaughter has requested to be the new owner of Dad's former car. Good choice, as the grandfather has decided to spend more on this Javelin than he might of spent on a generic new car.

Having sat for the better part of the last 15 years, the AMC is in the process of complete tear down. Every piece is being removed, tagged and bagged. Interior, exterior, drive train, trim, etc will all be revitalized. Instructions are specific, this car will only get four non-stock upgrades: Power Disc Brakes, Throaty Dual Exhaust, Custom Stereo and Complete Alarm System.

The car is scheduled to go to American Stipping for sandblasting on Thursday 5/21. Tune in for periodic updates over the next 6 months.

Good Day Sacramento At Gearhead Garage!!

Good Day Sacramento (a local news show) came and paid us a visit this last Saturday. They were actually doing a spot on Lawnmower racing- and our shop is "pimping out" a ride-a-long for a customer that is bringing The National Stabil Racing Series to NorCal.

Like any project coming to the shop, it needs full restoration. Plans include a hopped up engine, modified suspension, custom paint, upholstery and of course wider rims and tires.

Here is the link to the spot.

Good Day plans to return for updates on this project--Stay tuned!

Vertigo on Video!

Vertigo's maiden voyage took place over the weekend--This procharged 406 is fuel injected, backed by a 5 speed and 9" rearend. Dyno runs have put this combo down at over 700 RWHP. Mini-tubbed with a 4 link, this pro touring camaro is one fast street machine. One of the fastest I've driven yet!! Fortunately the 4 wheel Wilwood disc brakes and HydraBoost sytem can slow it down.

Click here to see a video shot this last weekend of Vertigo on the road. Here is a link to the forum on lateral-g.net

Initial runs went off without a hitch. Now we go through the shakedown and work on getting it ready for the Good Guys Pleasanton Show at the end of the month.

1966 Nova 5 Speed Conversion

Yes, more 5 speed conversions at Gearhead Garage! We can't get enough of Keisler Engineering Tremec 5 Speeds and we still hold the #1 Installer Top Spot in the USA!! Anyways, enough tooting our horn--

Out latest project is stuffing a 5 speed into a super clean '66 Chevy II SS. Already a 4 speed car, this Nova proved to be considerably more work than converting from an automatic to stick. But no worries, Mert Perkins, one of our many talented techs, has likely tackled more of these mods than anyone. After extensive floor modification, this cherry Nova still looks unmolested, now boasting a TKO 600 5 Speed, exiting smack dab out the center of the factory console.

Additional upgrades include: new custom carpets, custom rear package tray and other interior upgrades. And as always, we did a number of other mechanical repairs so this Chevy II is ready to hit the road!

Marquez Design & Fabrication

Gearhead Garage is an authorized dealer for Marquez Design & Fabrication products. We offer their full line of billet tail lights for Camaros, Blazers, Mustangs and more. We also supply their popular billet side markers, billet emblems, billet trunk hinges, door strikers, hood adjusters and more.

Additional products now include custom interior kits: custom door panels, one piece headliners, custom dashes, package trays and trunk lid covers. Shawn Katt, Gearhead Garage's own veteran in-house upholsterer has wrapped many of these Marquez panels. We have helped with their SEMA display car, Orion, a 1969 ProTouring Camaro. Additionally, we wrapped the door panels used in the GoodGuys Giveaway 1970 Chevelle, to name a few.

Marquez products are cutting edge in style, and high quality in design. Their products offer a great way to create a modern interior feel in a classic car, as well as a much needed alternative to upgrade stock exterior trim, badging & lighting.

Ididit Steering Columns

Gearhead Garage also sells & installs IDIDIT steering columns for most any application.

Ididit steering columns are a great way to spruce up your interior while providing additional comfort and a better feel. Ididit tilt columns are adjustable to multiple positions at the flick of a lever, allowing for more leg room, easier entry and exit from the vehicle, and a more ergonomic driving posture--perfect for the Pro Touring devotees. Columns are available in polished aluminum, chrome or a natural bare paintable finish.

Ever think of getting rid of your column shift and converting to a floor shifter? Ididit columns are a simple, cost effective way to do away with antiquated, awkward column shift automatic levers and old school "3 on the tree" systems. Plus they come with all new wiring which greatly simplifies getting your turn signals, hazards and horn working correctly.

Add the convenience and reliability of a new column built specific for your vehicle. This steering column is not a universal column that requires modification of your original vehicle to install. Simply remove your old column, saving your original under dash mount as well as the original floor mount. Using one of our installation kits (see table below), install your new steering column in place of the old. Add an aftermarket wheel and the gripping surface of the new wheel will be in the same location as the original.

If you don't currently have a column, Ididit offers a full array of columns, brackets & mounts that can be retrofitted into virtually any vehicle.

Visit our products page to see a complete line of performance parts we sell at competitive prices!

HydroBoost Braking System for GM "A" Body Vehicles

For those not familiar with how hydroboost systems work, here are some of the basics:

Most cars either run manual brakes or power brakes, with the latter usually being assisted by a vacuum operated brake booster that stores vacuum to help apply pressure to the master cylinder when the brake pedal is depressed. Many of us hot rodders have found that as we increase horsepower and run bigger camshafts, we tend to experience a stiffer brake pedal- and not in a good way. Large duration camshafts draw too little vacuum to keep an average power brake booster “charged” with air. As a result, the pedal gets stiffer and braking gets harder.

Hydroboost systems, commonly used in many diesel trucks, operate off of fluid dynamics instead of vacuum. These braking systems are run off of the power steering pump which gives them a much better ability to assist w/ braking at the master cylinder. One of the best advantages of such a system is that hydroboost units deliver 50% more braking pressure than normal brake systems, delivering roughly 1200 psi of pressure to the brakes as compared to a meager 800 psi generated by non hydraulic systems. This results in better braking, less pedal effort and a better “feel” at the brake pedal.

A recent article in Super Chevy Magazine showcased how well hydroboost systems work, in this instance providing the clamping pressure required to slow down a 1969 Chevy Nova just retrofitted with 4-wheel CPP disc brakes. Here’s a brief excerpt of their article:

“The big question was how well our Nova would stop with all these new parts. Our first test on the original wheels was 197 feet. Just by swapping on the new tires that number dropped to 188 feet, but the drums were toast after only one hard stop. With the new hydroboost-assisted brakes and Nitto tires, we managed a best stopping distance of 128 feet! That's an improvement of 60 feet. More importantly, we made 10 max-effort stops over the course of only 7 minutes and didn't experience any brake fade. In fact, the last stop was better than the first. The peak deceleration g-force was .73 g with the old parts, .89 g with the new tires, and a whiplash-inducing 1.12 g with the new brakes and tires. The Nova also lost its tendency to randomly pull to the right or left during braking. The hydroboost has a different feel compared to a traditional booster, but after a few stops we were confidently slinging the Nova to a halt.”.

HydroBoost by HydraTech offers their superior braking system for 1964 - 1972 GM "A" Body Vehicles. A very popular choice for GM classic car owners looking for a solid, reliable braking system similar to modern vehicles.

Pro Touring Defined

There are an infinite number of ways to build a pro-touring car, and perhaps the single greatest thing about the pro-touring genre is the fact that the term is always open to interpretation. At Gearhead Garage, these builds are our specialty, here are a few classifications:

Pro-Touring: A classic muscle car with upgraded and updated suspension components, brake system, drive train and aesthetics, including many of the creature comforts of a new car. Built to function as well or better than some of today’s best performance cars, Pro-Touring cars are built to be driven. On the street, race track, drag strip, through cones at an auto-cross, no matter the setting, pro-touring cars are meant to be driven. [Generally speaking, late model cars are not considered pro-touring due to their factory designed suspension and brake packages.]

G-Machine: [Once considered to mean the same thing as pro-touring, the term has now evolved to mean a slightly less refined pro-touring car] A classic muscle car with upgraded and updated suspension, brakes, drive train and aesthetics, generally lacking some of the creature comforts one would find in a pro-touring car, such as cup-holders, leather seats, etc., otherwise identical to a pro-touring car.

Street Fighter: [The term is adapted from a European genre of stripped down street bikes to mean stripped down pro-touring cars.] A classic muscle car with heavily modified and upgraded suspension and brake system components, powerful yet functional drive train, and little to no creature comforts. Most Street Fighters lack A/C, big billet wheels, chromed-out engine bays and navigation systems, but sport forged wheels, a roll cage and fabricated parts. Anything not necessary to make the car accelerate, decelerate, or handle better is stripped from the vehicle. Street Fighters are Pro-Touring counter-culture at its best; drivability is sacrificed for performance and function. In the simplest of fashions, Street Fighters can be equated to street legal race cars.**
